Why is SRF undertaking this project?

Our International Headquarters Building is more than 100 years old and as much as we have cared for it over the years, it is now in need of significant life-safety upgrades, including fire sprinklers, seismic strengthening, and Americans with Disabilities Act access upgrades. By enhancing the functionality and beauty of the site, we will ensure that it continues to benefit SRF/YSS members and friends, as well as our neighbors on Mt. Washington, serving as a sanctuary of peace and harmony for all who visit.

When will construction begin?

We anticipate the permitting process to take one to two years, and the earliest construction could begin is sometime after that.

How long will the project take?

According to best estimates, structural work and construction on the exterior enclosures of the buildings associated with the project should be completed in approximately one to two years. Interior work within the buildings will take approximately one year, some of which may overlap with the exterior work.

How will the project impact neighbors?

In the short run, SRF is aware that all construction has the potential to impact neighbors, and we are committed to minimizing any impacts to the greatest extent possible. But in the long run, the project will not result in any increased site capacity for visitors, employees, or residents, so we do not anticipate any long-term impacts.

Will the grounds be open during construction?

Unfortunately, the grounds will be closed during construction. However, we welcome you to visit our temples and grounds in Hollywood and Glendale, as well as the beautiful SRF Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades. For information about our local temples, please visit the SRF website.

Will the project result in more use of the site, or increased living accommodations?

Since the project will not result in any increased site capacity for visitors, employees, or residents, we do not anticipate any long-term impacts or increased use of the site or living accommodations.

How will the site improvements change traffic coming up the hill?

Some construction traffic will be unavoidable. However, we will be implementing a detailed Construction Management Plan to assist with traffic circulation. Since the project is not designed to accommodate additional residents, employees, or visitors, we do not foresee any long-term traffic impacts upon completion.

Is SRF going to continue hosting neighborhood events and activities?

Yes! Until construction begins, we plan to continue with our special events and activities. After construction ends and the site is safe for visitors again, we will reopen the gardens for the community to enjoy and we look forward to welcoming you. We love being a Mt. Washington neighbor.
